When you buy a car seat, it’s easy to assume it will last forever - especially if it looks fine on the outside. But just like helmets or cribs, car seats have a safe lifespan. Over time, materials degrade, safety standards evolve, and seats that once offered great protection may no longer do the job they were designed for. That’s why knowing when a car seat should be retired is an important part of keeping your child safe on the road.

Why don’t car seats last forever?

Car seats are made from a combination of plastic, metal, and fabrics - all of which are affected by time, temperature changes, UV exposure, and general use. Plastic becomes brittle as it ages, especially when exposed to heat (such as in cars, garages, or lofts). Buckles and harnesses may also wear out or lose strength. Even if a seat looks fine, internal damage or weakened components might not be visible - but could significantly reduce its ability to protect in a crash.

Is there an official expiry date?

In the UK and EU, car seats don’t have a legally required expiry date. However, every trusted manufacturer gives a recommended usage period - typically between 5 and 10 years, depending on the seat. This guidance is based on safety testing and reflects how long the seat is expected to perform well. While you can legally continue using a seat past this point, it’s no longer considered safe - especially for daily use or resale.

How long is a seat safe to use?

This varies depending on:

  • Brand and model: Some seats are only recommended for use for 5–7 years; others for up to 10, or even 15 years.

  • Type of seat: Infant carriers tend to have shorter lifespans than high back boosters.

  • Usage: Seats used every day wear faster than those used occasionally. The recommended use periods should still be adhered to for occasionally used seats.

  • Storage conditions: A seat kept in a hot loft or damp garage may degrade faster, even if unused.

Always check the manufacturer’s manual or the label embossed on the shell of the seat to find the date of manufacture and specific guidance.

Car seats are an investment in your child’s safety. Replacing a seat when it’s past its safe lifespan might feel inconvenient - especially if it still looks fine - but it’s one of the most important steps you can take to protect your child in a crash. Always check dates, follow the manual, and when in doubt, contact the manufacturer.

FAQ’s

How do I find the manufacture date of my car seat?

Most car seats have a sticker or an embossed stamp on the shell (usually under or behind the seat fabrics) that shows the manufacture date.

Can I use the same seat for multiple children?

Yes - but only if it’s within the seat’s lifespan and hasn’t been involved in a crash or suffered damage. Always check that all parts are present, the manual is followed, and the seat hasn’t expired.
