Why Rear Facing?

The simple answer

Rear-facing is the safest way for babies and young children to travel in a car.

​

In a collision, everything in the vehicle keeps moving forward - including your child. What matters most is how their body is supported in that moment.

​

A rear-facing car seat works by cradling your child’s head, neck and spine together, spreading the crash forces across the strongest parts of their body. Instead of one area taking the impact, the force is absorbed more evenly and is therefore significantly reduced.

​

Forward-facing seats work differently. The harness holds the body back, but the head continues to move forward. For young children, whose heads are large and whose necks are still developing, this creates significant strain on the neck and spine.

 

This is why direction of travel matters so much - it completely changes how the forces of a crash affect a child’s body.

What actually happens in a crash?

At just 30mph, a crash creates forces strong enough to throw the body forward with significant energy.

 

For adults, this is serious. For young children, it’s even more critical because their bodies are still developing.

  • A child’s head makes up around 25% of their body weight

  • Their spine is made up of softer, developing bones

  • The ligaments that hold everything together are more flexible

 

In a forward-facing seat, the harness holds the shoulders and torso back, but the head is thrown forward. This can place a large amount of force on the neck and upper spine.

​

In a rear-facing seat, the child is pushed back into the seat. The shell of the seat supports the entire head, neck and back, spreading the force across the whole body instead of concentrating it in one place.

​

It’s the difference between being caught and being thrown forward.

The Safety Facts

Rear-facing is up to 5 times safer than forward-facing for young children.

​

This figure comes from long-term crash data and research, particularly from Sweden, where rear-facing travel has been the norm for decades. Studies of real-world collisions have consistently shown a significantly reduced risk of serious injury for rear-facing children.

UK guidance supports the same approach. The Child Accident Prevention Trust, British Medical Journal and the NHS all have a multitude of resources encouraging Extended Rear Facing.

 

Similarly, RoSPA advises that:

“Rearward-facing child seats provide better protection for babies and young children… especially for the head and neck.”

To understand why, it helps to look at the forces involved. Crash test data from BeSafe shows that even at just 50 km/h (around 31 mph), the difference in neck forces is substantial:

“In a forward facing seat, the neck forces (Fz) can easily be up to 2000 N and in extreme cases even 3000 N.
In a rear facing seat, the neck forces (Fz) can be below 400 N.”

​

That’s a dramatic reduction in the strain placed on a child’s neck during a crash.

Countries like Sweden have built their national guidance around this evidence, recommending children stay rear-facing until at least age 4 - and often longer.

How long should my child rear-face?

  • Legal minimum (UK): 15 months

  • Good practice: At least 4 years, ideally to age 5 years plus

  • Safest option: As long as possible (up to 125cm / 36kg in some seats)

 

It’s easy to assume that once you reach 15 months, it’s time to turn your child forward. In reality, this is just the earliest legal point, not a safety target.

​

Many parents don’t realise that modern car seats are designed to keep children rear-facing for much longer. Depending on the seat, this can be well into their primary school years.

​

The reason is simple - the longer a child remains rear-facing, the longer their head, neck and spine are fully supported in a crash.

​

15 months is the starting line, not the finish line.

“Their legs look squashed”

Reality: Children are naturally very flexible. Sitting cross-legged, propped up, or with their legs resting on the seat is completely normal.

Leg injuries in rear-facing seats are very rare. The biggest risk in a crash is head and neck injury - and rear-facing protects against that.
